About 85 kilometres south of Natal, Pipa has become one of the best-known destinations in Rio Grande do Norte. Cliffs, beaches, tropical vegetation and the possibility of spotting dolphins create a landscape that contrasts with the more urban atmosphere of the capital.
But Pipa is about more than its beaches. Behind what is now an international destination lies a former fishing village that has changed considerably with the development of tourism, while remaining compact enough to explore much of the centre on foot.
Pipa, a village south of Natal
Pipa is located within the municipality of Tibau do Sul, on the southern coast of Rio Grande do Norte. About 85 kilometres from Natal, it is accessible by road from the capital and is one of the main tourist destinations along this part of the coast.
Unlike Natal or Ponta Negra, Pipa is therefore not a city in administrative terms. It is a locality within Tibau do Sul that has become so well known that its name is now much more widely recognised than that of the municipality to which it belongs.
From fishing village to international destination
Before the arrival of large-scale tourism, Pipa was essentially shaped by fishing and local coastal life. From the final decades of the 20th century onwards, the beauty of its landscapes gradually attracted Brazilian and international visitors, profoundly transforming the village.
Today, this evolution can be seen in its streets: pousadas, hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist services coexist within a village that remains relatively compact. This combination contributes to Pipa's distinctive identity.
Beaches between cliffs and vegetation
Pipa's coastline is particularly characterised by its cliffs, beaches and the vegetation that still borders several stretches of the coast. The scenery changes quickly as you move from one beach to another.
Praia do Centro provides the most immediate connection between the village and the ocean. From there, depending on the tide, it is possible to continue along other stretches of the coastline and gradually discover very different landscapes.
Praia do Amor and Chapadão
South of the centre, Praia do Amor is one of Pipa's best-known beaches. Surrounded by cliffs, it is particularly associated with surfing, in a setting quite different from that of the central beach.
Above the cliffs, Chapadão offers another perspective on the coastline. Here, it is not just the beach that draws the eye, but also the succession of cliffs, the ocean and the vast coastal landscape.
Baía dos Golfinhos and Praia do Madeiro
North of Pipa, Baía dos Golfinhos takes its name from the dolphins that can be seen along this part of the coast. Their presence is one of the region's best-known natural features.
Further along, Praia do Madeiro also combines sea, vegetation and cliffs. These different areas show why discovering Pipa is not simply a matter of choosing one beach and spending the entire day there: just a few kilometres are enough to experience a completely different atmosphere.
A lively village after nightfall
As the day comes to an end on the beaches, activity gradually shifts towards the centre of Pipa. Restaurants, bars, small shops and places to go out create an atmosphere that contrasts with the daytime experience.
This lively atmosphere is part of Pipa's identity today and also helps explain why the destination attracts such a wide range of visitors: some come primarily for the beaches and nature, while others also enjoy the village's restaurants and nightlife.

Nature and landscapes around Pipa
Pipa's appeal also extends beyond its centre and best-known beaches. The municipality of Tibau do Sul offers other coastal landscapes, areas of preserved vegetation and Guaraíras Lagoon, while the Santuário Ecológico de Pipa contributes to the protection and discovery of the local environment.
Pipa can therefore serve as a starting point for exploring a wider part of the southern coast of Rio Grande do Norte, rather than being seen as an isolated destination.
Discovering Pipa at your own pace
Pipa owes much of its reputation to its beaches, cliffs and tropical landscapes. But its appeal also comes from the variety found within a relatively small area: village life, beaches, nature, restaurants and nightlife can all be experienced without travelling long distances.
Taking the time to move from one environment to another is perhaps the best way to understand why this former fishing village has become one of the best-known destinations in Rio Grande do Norte.
